Dot in a Minute: Getting into the flow

In the zone

Maybe it’s something about entering November that brings to mind this sense of hunkering down.

Regardless if it’s running, cooking, working or creating, the sensation is the same. The flow state of mind, AKA feeling ‘in the zone’, is a psychological term for that shared feeling.

Coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a flow state is defined as the state of being fully immersed and concentrated. It feels trance-like. Time disappears. You are fully engaged and present.

Getting into the flow state requires doing something uniquely meaningful to you — important enough to focus your concentration and not difficult enough to lose it.

It’s an interesting thing to ponder individually: what in life feels meditative, grounding and ultimately rewarding?

Surf’s up

For Trizanne Barnard, the ocean is her sanctuary. When she’s surfing, she says, “I recharge in the ocean. It's where I lose all my titles as wife, mother, winemaker and just be and become one.” Trizanne is the founder of Dawn Patrol Wines and a storyteller at the upcoming Cape Town launch.

Finding shared humanity... in fashion

As for the Dots this week, fashion can be the most unexpected catalyst for change. We experienced fashion as a force for good this week at London’s Piazza of Fashion. Our storytellers and community connected about extraordinary transformations, creativity, mental health and so much more. This is what fashion should be.
